Abstract :

In the presentation, I will describe a few general directions on mobile multimedia research and development (R&D). I will then discuss some specific research topics, which include face recognition, object reconstruction, optical flow computation and its applications.

The presentation is not a traditional scientific/technical presentation on a specific topic. It is intended to provide some overviews on the landscape of mobile multimedia R&D, and stimulate the participation of audiences to this interesting field.

Biography :

Dr. Qi is a principal engineer at Qualcomm Inc. since 2000. He is a member of the Multimedia Research and Development team, where he works on issues related to the enabling of multimedia functions on mobile platform. His work at Qualcomm Inc. has produced more than a dozen of patents; but are not published, in part, due to proprietary considerations. His current research interests are on pattern recognition and computer vision.

Dr. Qi was an Associate Professor with tenure at the University of Arizona before joining Qualcomm Inc. in 2000. His research then was mainly on speech processing and its applications to people with speech/hearing impairments. His work was funded by several US national organizations such as National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. He was the recipient of several awards from national organizations such as Acoustical Society of America and American Speech and Hearing Association.
