Abstract :

This talk presents the study on the influence of various bio-coatings on micro electrode array performances developed for neurological investigations in the framework of the EU-project NeuroProbes. The silicon-based neural probes consist of multiple platinum electrodes on the probe shafts for neural recording applications. The neural probe surface was chemically modified by immobilizing biocompatible coating via covalent bond. Three types of bio-coating (dextran, hyaluronic acid and dexamethasone) were studied. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the coatings were analyzed and examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) respectively. The coated probes were also characterized by electrode impedance measurement. The biocompatibility of the coated probes was investigated by an in vivo study on rats. Light transmission and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate neuronal survival, glial response and probe surface. It was found that different bioactive molecule coatings had small differential effects on neural cell numbers and gliosis, with optimal results achieved using the dexamethasone coated probes.

Biography :

Dr. Winnie Chow received her B.Eng. degree in Mechanical and Automation Engineering, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree in Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, in 2002, 2004, and 2008, respectively. She then worked in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University in Sweden as a postdoctoral fellow, participating in the EU NeuroProbes project. In July 2010 she was awarded the Swedish G繹ran Gustafsson Fellowship to conduct surface studies for solar cell applications at Material Physics of Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. Her research interests include micro/nano electro mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), and nanotechnology for biomedical, material science, and energy applications.
