Admission Requirements

(I) General Regulations

  1. Applicants seeking admission to a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree of the University shall have satisfied the minimum entrance requirements of the University and the programme concerned.
  2. Applicants seeking admission on the strength of Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination Results shall have satisfed the minimum entrance requirements listed in Section (II) below.
  3. Applicants seeking admission on the strength of qualifications other than Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination Results shall have satisfied the minimum entrance requirements listed in Section (III) below.

(II) Admission on the Strength of HKALE and HKCEE Results

(A) Minimum University Requirements

To satisfy the minimum University requirements for application, students are required to obtain:

  1. In one sitting of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), Grade E or above in at least seven subjects including two language subjects (Chinese Language^, English Language^, French, or German); and
  2. In one or more sittings# of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), Grade E or above in Advanced Supplementary Level Chinese Language and Culture*; and in Advanced Supplementary Level Use of English, and in at least
    1. two AdvancedLevel subjects; or
    2. one Advanced Level and two Advanced Supplementary Level subjects

Notes:

^ Level 2 or above for Chinese Language and English Language in HKCEE commencing 2007.

# Results of applicants repeating in HKALE subjects will be downgraded.  The scales of downgrading are subject to review by individual Programmes periodically.

* Subject to fulfilling the following conditions, JUPAS applicants may, at the discretion of the Faculty Deans concerned, be granted waivers of the Chinese language admission requirements:

 The applicants concerned

(i) should NOT have taken the Chinese Language subject in HKCEE and the AS Chinese Language and Culture subject in HKALE, and

(ii) should have obtained Grade E or above in the French or German subject in HKCEE, and

(iii) should have obtained Grade E or above in 1 other AL/AS subject as a substitute for the AS Chinese Language and Culture subjects.

 (In other words, applicants concerned will no longer be required to take a Chinese test arranged by the University.)


(B) MAE Programme Requirements

In addition, applicants for Mechanical and Automation Engineering programme shall satisfy the following additional requirements:

For students admitted in 2008-09 and thereafter

1. Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (same as the CUHK University Minimum Admission Requirements:

    1. Grade E or above** in the one sitting in at least 7 subjects including 2 language subjects (Chinese Language, English Language, French or German)

    Note:

    ** Level 2 or above for Chinese Language and English Language in HKCEE commencing 2007

2. Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination:

    The applicant should have obtained in one or more sittings## of the HKALE

    1. Grade E or above in one of the following AL subjects: Pure Mathematics, Physics, or Applied Mathematics,
    +
    Either
    Grade E or above in another AL subject
    or
    Grade E or above in any other 2 AS subjects 

    2. Grade E pr above in AS Chinese Language & Culture and AS Use of English

    Note:
    ## Results of applicants repeating in HKALE subjects will be downgraded. The scales of downgrading are subject to review by individual Programmes periodically.


(C) Criteria for Selection

Applicants will be considered on the basis of the results they obtained in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination and the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination, and their academic and extracurricular achievements in school. If they are invited to attend an interview, their performance at the interview may also be taken into consideration.

 

(III) Admission on the Strength of Qualifications other than HKALE Results


(A) Minimum University requirements for application

Applicants shall be eligible to apply for admission if they

  1. have obtained in one sitting of the GCE Advanced Level Examination pass grades in no less than 3 subjects (Applicants with pass grades in 2 GCE Advanced Level and 2 Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects may also apply); OR
  2. have acquired an International Baccalaureate Diploma; OR
  3. possess a qualification obtained outside Hong Kong which qualifies them for university admission in the country/region where such qualification is obtained; OR
  4. possess a Matriculation Certificate of The Chinese University of Hong Kong issued in 1978 or before; OR
  5. have obtained in one sitting of the Hong Kong Higher Level Examination grade E or above in no less than 5 subjects including Chinese Language & Literature and English Language; OR
  6. have successfully completed:
    1. at least one year of undergraduate study at a recognized university; OR
    2. a course of study leading to the qualification of associate degree / higher diploma; OR
  7. are mature persons aged 23 or over on 1st September in the year when admission is sought, provided:
    1. they are able to show either by publication or by other acceptable evidence that they have achieved sufficient competence in their chosen field of study to justify admission; or have shown exceptional ability in appropriate academic or professional fields; AND
    2. they can produce evidence of continuous residence in Hong Kong for at least three years; OR
    3. have other exceptional abilities which merit admission.

They shall also have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in both the Chinese and English languages, unless exempted from this language requirement by the University*.

Note:
*    Waivers of the Chinese language admissions requirements may be granted to individual non-JUPAS / non-local applicants, at the discretion of the Faculty Deans concerned, on the following conditions:

(i)    non-JUPAS/non-local applicants concerned should have studied abroad or in local international schools (for no less than 3 academic years immediately prior to admissions), and
(ii) non-JUPAS/non-local applicants concerned should NOT have failed in the Chinese language subject in public examinations or in the Chinese proficiency tests administered by the University


(B) Criteria for Selection

Applicants shall be considered on the basis of their educational background and academic achievements.  If they are invited to attend an interview, their performance at the interview will also be taken into consideration.
